The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) Battle Group 45, deployed under the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening joint operations with Somali security forces as part of ongoing efforts to counter the Al-Shabaab insurgency and enhance civilian protection.
The commitment was reiterated during a security coordination meeting held at the Battle Group 45 headquarters in Barawe, which brought together UPDF commanders, Somali security officials, local administrators and community leaders.
Addressing the meeting, Battle Group 45 Commander Colonel Justus Musenene emphasised the importance of close cooperation between AUSSOM troops and Somali forces, noting that Al-Shabaab continues to adapt its tactics, requiring a united and coordinated response.
He said sustained collaboration remains critical to consolidating security gains and ensuring long-term stability in the region.
“We are here to support our Somali brothers and sisters in maintaining peace and stability. Only through close coordination and unity of effort can we defeat the enemy,” Colonel Musenene said.
Barawe District Commissioner Cumar Abdullaahi welcomed the continued partnership, underscoring the need for joint action in confronting the terrorist threat while safeguarding civilians.
He commended the UPDF contingent for its role in maintaining relative stability in Barawe and surrounding areas.
Similarly, the 66 Brigade Commander of the Somali National Army, Colonel Liiban Yusuf Gare, called for unity among all security agencies, stressing that coordinated operations are essential to restoring peace and security across Somalia.
The meeting was attended by senior and junior officers from the Somali National Army and AUSSOM, the Barawe Police Commander, as well as local government officials and community leaders, reflecting a broad-based security approach to addressing the persistent threat posed by Al-Shabaab.
UPDF troops continue to play a key role under AUSSOM, working alongside Somali forces to stabilise liberated areas and support Somalia’s wider security transition.
